NUTRITION NEWS FOCUS
"Nutrition news is important. We help you understand it!"
There are more than 24,000 Web pages trying to sell you water ionizers.
These are machines costing several hundred dollars that claim to create either
alkaline ionized water (hydroxyl ions) or acid ionized water (hydrogen ions) by
passing electric current through the water. As any elementary school
science student should be able to tell you, electrolysis of water creates
hydrogen and oxygen atoms, not ions.
Numerous health claims are made, none of which has any evidence. For
instance, "ionized water provides the body with lots of oxygen and
energy." The only animals that derive oxygen from water are fish. Do
you have gills? "Ionized water helps balance the body's pH."
If ionized water were alkaline
enough to do that, it would burn your mouth on the way down. "Keeping
ourselves alkaline is the first line of defense in fighting any disease."
If the bloodstream rises more than two-tenths of a unit above neutral, we get
quite sick.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The claims just don't stop. "Ionized water is up to
six times more hydrating than conventional water. One of the primary causes of
disease is chronic cellular dehydration." And if you're not
convinced, it is better for plant growth. Not one of these claims is
correct or has a shred of evidence. But with a huge number of companies
selling these useless products, many have wasted their money.

Based on solid scientific evidence and
clinical research
Hi !
Isn't it great to know that Shaklee is not one of "those companies"
who are selling products just to make a buck and making claims for those
products that simply are not true and not based on solid scientific evidence and
clinical research?
There is a great solution to the concern people have with what may be in the
water they drink and cook with.......Bestwater systems from Shaklee. The
best solution is the Bestwater Reverse-Osmosis countertop purification system. We
have owned and used one in our home since 1988, 13 years. It is as close
to being hassle/maintenance free as anything on the market. It does not
just filter water, it purifies it, using the same technology used in kidney
dialysis machines to filter and purify the blood.
When you have a Bestwater R.O. system in your home you will NEVER need to worry
or think about what possible contaminants may be in your water now, or get into
your water in the future. We also have received some great health
testimonials from satisfied customers who after purchasing and using the system,
enjoyed some terrific new health benefits. Just from drinking clean water!
Another point is many people don't stop to consider all the different ways they
consume water--- drinking, coffee, juice, tea, baking, cooking, ice cubes,
etc... And, even our dogs know the difference! When we put Bestwater in a
bowl and tap water, they always drink the Bestwater first!
With this system you can produce all of the purified water you'll ever use at an
end cost of 10 to 20 cents per gallon, far less than other drinking water
alternatives. Of course there are other Bestwater options available- a water
pitcher, whole house systems, and a 5-stage charcoal treatment system.

Americans Relate Water To
Well-Being, But Most
Don't Get Their Fill; Survey Shows 33 Percent of What Americans Drink Can Cause
Dehydration
NEW YORK, May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Although an overwhelming majority of
Americans know that drinking water enhances health, most don't drink as much per
day as they should, according to the results of a national consumer survey
released today. The survey of 2,818 Americans, conducted in 14 U.S. cities by
Yankelovich Partners for The Rockefeller University in New York and the
International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), reveals a sizable difference
between what people know and what they do.
For instance, 73 percent of respondents know that most
nutrition and health experts recommend drinking eight or more eight-ounce
servings of water each day. However, more than half (51 percent) of respondents
admit to falling short of that goal, with the average American consuming 6.1
servings of water per day. In fact, only 34 percent report drinking the
recommended daily amount of water. Twenty-eight percent drink two or fewer
servings. And nearly 10 percent say they don't drink water at all.
While Americans do drink 5.6 servings of beverages such as
milk, juice, carbonated soda without caffeine, new-age beverages and sports
drinks, they also frequently consume beverages that can actually make optimal
hydration more difficult to reach. These diuretic beverages include coffee and
caffeinated sodas.
Research has shown that caffeine and alcohol are diuretics,
and drinking them can cause the body to lose water. Even though 77 percent of
people are familiar with the dehydrating effects of these beverages, 33 percent
of what Americans drink can actually cause dehydration. In fact, Americans
consume a daily average of 5.9 servings of these drinks.
``Most people know they aren't drinking enough water,''
says Barbara Levine, R.D., Ph.D., Director of Human Nutrition at The Rockefeller
University. ``Many also know their other beverage choices can contribute to
dehydration. But they may not fully realize the impact of dehydration on their
everyday lives and long-term health - and that's cause for concern.''
The Inside Story of Water and Health
After oxygen, water is the human body's most important nutrient. It comprises
more than 70 percent of the body's tissues. And it has an important role in
nearly every major function, such as regulating temperature, carrying nutrients
and oxygen to cells, removing waste, cushioning joints, and protecting organs
and tissues.
``Without proper hydration, the body is exposed to a
variety of health risks,'' says Levine. ``Long-term, more severe dehydration
poses serious problems that dangerously affect blood pressure, circulation,
digestion, kidney function and nearly all body functions.''
Some respondents claim to experience minor health problems
related to dehydration on a frequent basis. For example, one in five reports
frequently feeling the effects of dehydration, which include feeling tired or
groggy when waking or at mid-day. Respondents also experience dry or itchy skin
(14 percent), headaches (11 percent), indigestion (9 percent), lapses in mental
concentration (7 percent), and constipation (4 percent) on a frequent basis.
While most people recognize a relationship between water
intake and health, significant knowledge gaps still remain. For instance, 37
percent of respondents mistakenly believe the body needs less water when the
weather is cold than when it is warm. Nearly half (49 percent) believe the body
loses less water while sleeping, which is also not true. And 32 percent don't
know that giving a child water instead of juice or regular soda may prevent
childhood obesity.
``Hydration is fast becoming a public health issue,'' says
Levine. ``The lack of awareness revealed by this survey supports the need for
widespread education.''

WATER
FOR: We all know that
water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before.
Dieting ……
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world
population) In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is
often mistaken for hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism
as much as 3%. One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost
100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study.
Energy
…
Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. Preliminary research indicates
that 8-10 glasses of water a day could increase energy.
Pain …
Water can significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
Memory
…
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with
basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
Cancer
…
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%,
plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely
to develop bladder cancer.
Are
you drinking the amount of water you should every day?
PLEASE
NOTE: Drink only purified water! Chlorine, pesticides and
other chemicals that can be found in much of the unpurified water is NOT
HEALTHY!
COKE
No wonder coke tastes soooo good.
